Death toll estimates 230.000 – 316.000 deaths. Dead bodies began to pile up outside houses were they were found or by the road – waiting for someone to pick them up. But, cemeteries were full as were the hospitals. The smell of corpses laid like a thick veil over The Haitian capital, Port au Prince.

Within days after the earthquake the people of Haiti are hungry, desperate and frustrated. Violence and looting are erupting and groups of young men and woman are breaking into banks and supply stores in the city’s commercial district – taking away what they can. Store owners, with the help of police and armed private security, defended their properties. Those who did not stop were shot.

Two weeks into the earthquake catastrophe, food and clean water remains limited and distribution is chaotic for the survivors despite the efforts of the international aid agencies – there is not enough food for everyone in line. Frequent fights in the food lines made it even worse to hand out food.

62 international search and rescue teams, totaling about 1,800 people, arrived to Haiti during the first two weeks. They made a great effort and were able to rescue 132 people from the rubble over an 11 day period.
